- Day 3-4: Surface installation (paver laying, cutting, setting)
- Day 5: Edging, polymeric sand, final cleanup

What Cape Cod’s Climate Means for Your Material Choices
Freeze-thaw cycles are relentless here. From November to March, we see repeated temperature swings through freezing. Any moisture trapped under your hardscape surface freezes, expands by about 9%, and pushes. This is how patios heave and walls bow. The solution is deep compacted gravel bases, proper edge restraints, and materials rated for freeze-thaw exposure.
Salt air degrades certain materials faster. If you’re within a mile or two of the water – and on Cape Cod, most of us are – salt air is a real factor. We choose materials accordingly.
Sandy soil shifts. Cape Cod’s glacial soil is mostly sand. A shallow base that would be fine in Boston will shift on the Cape. We go deeper – typically 8-10 inches of compacted gravel – to compensate.

- Concrete pavers (manufactured for freeze-thaw)
- Granite (extremely durable, handles coastal conditions well)
- Bluestone (beautiful, durable when properly sealed)

The Hardscape Installation Process, Step by Step
Step 1: Site visit and design. We walk the property with you, discuss how you want to use the space, look at drainage, grade, and soil conditions.
Step 2: Written estimate. You get a detailed quote breaking down excavation, base materials, surface materials, labor, and timeline.
Step 3: Permitting (if required). Some projects – particularly retaining walls over 4 feet – require permits. We handle this.
Step 4: Excavation. We dig out the area to the required depth and establish proper drainage.
Step 5: Base preparation. Gravel is installed in layers and compacted. This is the most important step.
Step 6: Surface installation. Pavers or stone are laid, cut to fit, and set.
